Introduction
At just 3½ years old, Gunner, a charming and deeply intuitive Boxer, is already making a meaningful impact in the lives of first responders and community members across New Jersey. As a proud member of the Crisis Response Canine Organization, Gunner provides calm, comfort, and unconditional support to those facing stress, trauma, and crisis.
From Training to Triumph
Gunner’s journey began under the expert guidance of Brian Merrill, owner and lead trainer of YESS Dog. Through the YESS Dog program, Gunner developed not only obedience and control, but also the emotional intelligence necessary to serve in high-pressure situations.
Thanks to Brian’s thoughtful and compassionate training approach, Gunner was set up for success from the very beginning.
A Certified Comfort Companion
Gunner holds multiple AKC Obedience Certifications:
These certifications recognize not only Gunner’s skill and discipline, but his readiness to provide support in some of the most challenging environments.
A Member of the CISM Team
Today, Gunner is a proud member of the Fireman’s Benevolent Association Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team. Working closely with his handler, Tara, Gunner offers support during:
“Gunner doesn’t need words—he just knows when someone needs comfort, and he shows up every single time,” says Tara.
Supporting the Unsung Heroes: ODU Visits
One of Gunner’s recent missions takes him on heartwarming tours to all five NJSP Operational Dispatch Unit (ODU) sites across the state. There, he meets with public safety telecommunicators—the often-unseen heroes who answer 911 calls, coordinate emergency responses, and support field officers during crisis situations.
Gunner brings instant smiles, tail wags, and a moment of relief to these hardworking professionals.
“You could feel the mood lift the moment Gunner walked in,” shared one dispatcher. “It’s amazing what one dog can do; his visits make everyone’s day better!”
A Welcomed Presence at NJ State Police
Gunner reports to work several days a week with Tara at the New Jersey State Police Division Headquarters in West Trenton, where he’s become a familiar and cherished member of the team. His presence promotes mental wellness, reduces stress, and reminds everyone that caring for each other is part of the mission.
The Power of Partnership
Gunner’s journey is a beautiful example of what happens when purpose, training, and compassion come together. With Tara’s guidance and Brian Merrill’s foundation through Yess Dog, Gunner continues to thrive as a crisis response canine, a wellness ambassador, and a furry friend to all.
More Than a Working Dog
When he’s off duty, Gunner is still very much part of the action. He loves car rides, meeting new people, and soaking up affection from anyone lucky enough to cross his path. His personality is playful, loving, and full of heart—just like you'd expect from a dog who’s devoted his life to helping others heal.
Gunner’s story is a testament to the incredible impact therapy and crisis response dogs can have—not just in emergencies, but in everyday life. He reminds us all to slow down, take a deep breath, and let a little kindness in.
Gunner and Tara are continuing their work across New Jersey—visiting first responders, dispatchers, and community partners, spreading healing and connection… one paw at a time. Follow his amazing journey on social media: Instagram @thee_gunn_show Facebook Thee Gunn Show.
